Secret Weapon is a blend of winter peas and forage soybeans combined with a blend of brassicas. The brassicas include turnips, forage rape, and hybrid forage turnips. This blend will provide a unique late season and early winter food plot ideal for those small plots that are are the right size for a “Secret Weapon” in your best hunting locations. Deer will hit this plot hard for several weeks. With turnips in the blend, they will come back in winter.
Plant 45 – 60 days before you want it to have prime attraction and maximum activity. This plot can also be planted in the late spring. Where possible, it is a good idea to put out at least 2 – 3 of these plots to even out the browse pressure.
Soil acidity should be at least 6 pH. Fertilize with 15-15-15 nitrogen fertilizer at the rate of 300 pounds to the acre.
You will need to disk or rotovate the soil, at least 3 inches deep. For maximum weed and grass control, till, wait 2 – 3 weeks and then spray with a glyphosate to kill green regrowth. Wait the length of time required on the spray, fertilize, and lightly till. Innoculating the beans and peas with a soybean innoculate will improve germination. Because of the wide range of seed sizes, broadcast the peas and beans first. Run a drag or harrow over the peas and beans. Broadcast the brassicas and cultipack or roll all the seeds.
Deer activity will begin to increase when the plants reach 4 – 6 inches high. This will take about 4 weeks from planting. If you are in northern climates, plant early enough to let the turnips grow a good bulb. This will provide some good late season activity.
